Teeth Whitening

What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a process designed to address yellowing or darkening of the tooth enamel, often caused by various factors. This is achieved using a whitening gel approved by the Ministry of Health. Many individuals seeking aesthetic improvements turn to professional teeth whitening methods, as opposed to relying on home remedies or over-the-counter products.

It is important to note that teeth whitening is not a procedure that should be conducted based on online research alone. Many people search for products like stain removers, whitening strips, whitening lights, gels, or homemade remedies, but these can sometimes be ineffective or even harmful.

For addressing color changes, tartar cleaning and polishing are typically the first steps. If these methods do not achieve the desired whiteness, professional teeth whitening is a viable option.

Professional teeth whitening can lighten tooth color by 3-4 shades, though results can vary between individuals. Whitening should not be done at home without professional guidance. The safest approach is to follow the dentist’s recommendations for home use of whitening gel in addition to in-office treatments. This ensures effective and safe whitening while minimizing potential risks.

Office Bleaching

In-office teeth whitening is a highly effective treatment performed by a dentist, known for delivering significant results in a relatively short time. This method is particularly effective for treating severe discoloration, including very dark or yellow teeth. It typically involves the application of a whitening gel combined with light or laser, and the entire procedure usually takes about one hour.
The process generally consists of 2-3 sessions of 15-20 minutes each. The number of sessions needed depends on the condition of your teeth and their sensitivity. To enhance and prolong the whitening results, tartar and calculus are cleaned prior to the whitening treatment.
Protective agents are applied to the gums to prevent damage from the high-oxygen whitening gel, which is then activated using light or laser. The gel is applied to the teeth, and depending on its type, may require light activation. Recent advancements have introduced dual gel applications, allowing effective whitening with minimal discomfort in a single session.
After the gel is applied and the light treatment is completed, the results are assessed. Additional sessions may be conducted if necessary. It is common to experience some tooth sensitivity following the treatment, but this typically subsides within a few days.

Home Bleaching

The home teeth whitening method involves using a whitening kit provided by your dentist, designed for safe and effective at-home treatment. This method is a reliable option for achieving a brighter smile when used correctly. Here’s how the process typically works:

Initial Examination and Measurements: Your dentist will take impressions of your mouth to create custom trays (or plastic mouthpieces) that fit precisely.

Preparation of Trays: Based on these impressions, custom trays are made to ensure a comfortable fit. The dentist will provide you with a whitening gel, which should be applied to these trays in the amount specified. Using too much gel can lead to overflow, which may irritate your gums. If this occurs, clean the excess gel with a cotton swab and rinse the area with water.

Application: Place the trays with the gel into your mouth.

Duration and Frequency: For effective results, keep the trays in your mouth for the duration recommended by your dentist. This usually ranges from 4 to 8 hours during the day, or overnight for 9 to 10 hours. Typically, the treatment is applied for 10-14 days, but this can vary depending on the degree of discoloration and the specific whitening gel used. Nighttime use is often preferred for convenience.

By following these steps and adhering to your dentist’s recommendations, you can achieve noticeable whitening results while minimizing the risk of side effects.
